Optional Excursion Kamakura
Today, a group of adventurous students took part in an optional excursion to Kamakura, a coastal city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. It was the perfect opportunity to escape the pace of Tokyo for a day and discover another side of Japan.
Our first stop was the famous Great Buddha of Kamakura (Daibutsu). Standing tall and serene, the massive bronze statue left everyone impressed. Students spent time learning about its history, taking photos, and appreciating the peaceful atmosphere surrounding one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks.
From there, we visited a beautiful temple, where students experienced a quieter side of Japanese culture. Walking through the grounds, surrounded by traditional architecture and gardens, provided a chance to reflect and take in the history of this remarkable city.
Of course, no visit to Kamakura would be complete without exploring the bustling shopping street. Students enjoyed browsing local stores, searching for souvenirs, sampling Japanese snacks, and practicing a bit of their Japanese language skills with friendly shopkeepers. There were plenty of treats purchased and even more stories shared along the way.
The afternoon brought us to the nearby beach, where an already wonderful day became truly memorable. What started as a chance to relax by the ocean quickly turned into an opportunity for international connection. Students met a group of international students, and before long, conversations, games, and laughter were flowing naturally despite coming from different parts of the world.
As if that wasn’t enough, the group also spent time with a local rugby team on the beach. Students bonded over sport, shared experiences, and enjoyed the chance to connect with local Japanese students in a completely unexpected way. These spontaneous moments often become the most meaningful memories of a trip, and today was a perfect example of that.
Everyone agreed that Kamakura had offered something special: a blend of history, culture, friendship, and adventure. From standing before the Great Buddha to meeting new friends from around the world, the day reflected exactly what Global Summers Academy is all about—learning through experience and building connections that cross borders.
A fantastic day filled with new perspectives, new friendships, and memories that will stay with us long after we leave Japan.
