Matsumoto Castle - The Crow Castle
Blue skies, sunshine, and one of Japan’s most stunning castles—our excursion to Matsumoto Castle could not have been more perfect.
Known as the “Crow Castle” because of its striking black exterior, Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan’s oldest surviving castles and a designated National Treasure. Standing proudly against the backdrop of the Japanese Alps, it’s easy to see why it is one of the country’s most beloved landmarks.
We spent the day wandering the castle grounds, admiring the reflections on the moat, and soaking in the history and beauty that surrounds every corner. The contrast of the black castle against the bright blue sky made for some incredible views and even better memories.
There’s something special about slowing down and exploring places like this—taking in the craftsmanship, imagining the stories these walls could tell, and appreciating the generations who have helped preserve such an important piece of Japan’s history.
With the mountains in the distance, warm sunshine overhead, and plenty of smiles along the way, it was one of those days that reminds you why we’re so excited to be calling Nagano home.
We continue to fall a little more in love with this prefecture every day.
