July 19 - Mykonos Optional Excursion

Today was another optional excursion – going to the island of Mykonos! Students met around 10 am to head to the port in Ermoupoli to take the ferry from Syros to Mykonos. After a smooth ride, the group headed straight to lunch by the Mykonos old port for a traditional meal of Greek salad, soutzoukakia and rice.

We then got onto a bus to take us closer to the town of Chora, and met our tour guide. The guide took us on a tour from the port to Little Venice over to the iconic windmills, with stops in between to let us know the rich history of the island. We saw the island’s pelican mascot, however not the original pelican that was found in 1954. We also learned that the island has a strict colour code which requires the houses to be painted white, which helps keep homes and buildings cool during the summer months.

The tour ended back in the port and students had a few hours of free time to explore all of the shops and the food that the town had to offer. Students enjoyed the classic tourist shops, but also the boutique stores and high-end fashion that Mykonos is known for. They enjoyed food, ice cream, and the views while taking breaks from the heat of the sun.

Students made their way back to the bus to take us back to the ferry, where they enjoyed the sunset on board. Back at the resort, students were able to have a quick snack at the buffet before heading to the lobby to watch the World Cup Final or go to their rooms to relax after a long and exciting day.
