The City of Ruins: Pompeii

Another travel day this morning… but this time, it’s our last!

After checking out of Sorrento, we made one final stop before heading north: the ancient ruins of Pompeii. With so much history packed into one place, it was an unforgettable morning. 🏛️

Our guide, Ericka, shared fascinating stories about the city and thoughtfully stopped in shaded areas whenever possible to explain the history (a much appreciated strategy during the heat wave)! We explored the remains of theatres, homes, courtyards, and even what was essentially an ancient restaurant, complete with an intact pizza oven. 🍕

It’s incredible to imagine that a thriving port city, located just 15 km from Mount Vesuvius, was buried beneath volcanic ash in just a few days nearly 2,000 years ago. 🌋

After braving the heat together, we were happy to cool off with lunch at the restaurant on site. The menu featured a classic Margherita pizza, vanilla gelato for dessert, and plenty of orange fanta, lemon soda, and water to keep everyone refreshed.🍊🍨

Back on the bus, we began the journey toward our final week of this incredible program. There are still plenty more adventures and field trips ahead, and we’re excited to see what the next few days bring! 🇮🇹
