Sensoji Temple, Tokyo Sky Tree, and Samurai Birthday Celebrations!
Our first full day in Japan began in the best possible way—with a mind-blowing Japanese breakfast. From perfectly grilled fish and fluffy rice to miso soup and a variety of beautifully prepared side dishes, every bite felt like an introduction to a new side of Japanese culture. It was safe to say we were all wide awake (jet lag didn’t stand a chance after that!).
After breakfast, we gathered for class introductions, getting to know each other better, sharing where we’re from, and setting the tone for an incredible experience ahead. The excitement in the room was contagious—we’re not just travellers, but a team ready to learn and explore together.
Next, we headed out for a walking tour around the Sensoji Temple area, stepping straight into the atmosphere of Edo-era Tokyo. The streets were alive with history and colour, from traditional shopfronts to the iconic temple gates. Along the way, we even managed to spot the Tokyo Skytree rising in the distance—a perfect reminder of how this city blends the old and the new so seamlessly.
At Sensoji Temple, we tried our luck with fortune papers. Some of us celebrated “good luck” predictions, while others… not so much! Those with less favourable fortunes carefully tied them up at the temple, hoping to leave the bad luck behind. It was a fun and memorable cultural moment for everyone.
Of course, no outing is complete without snacks, and we sampled plenty of fun Japanese treats along the way—sweet, savoury, and everything in between.
But the absolute highlight of the day? Celebrating Adam’s birthday! 🎉
The group went all out to make it special. Early in the morning, students decorated his door and surprised him, kicking off a day he won’t forget. Later, we helped pick out the perfect gifts: an “Ichiban” headband and a samurai keychain—iconic and very fitting souvenirs from Japan. To top it all off, we ended the evening gathered together, singing happy birthday before bed, with plenty of smiles and laughter all around.
It was the perfect mix of culture, exploration, and community—exactly what this program is all about.
Now, as we wind down after an unforgettable first day, it’s time to rest up for what’s next.
おやすみなさい (Oyasuminasai) from Tokyo 🌙
