Program Manager's Final Words

As our incredible study travel program comes to an end, we reflect on the amazing journey we have shared through Portugal and Spain. From the castles and cobblestones of the mainland to the art and many languages of Spain, and the sun-soaked beaches throughout, this Mediterranean adventure has been bursting with culture, adventure, and unforgettable experiences.

Our adventure began in Lisbon, Portugal’s coastal capital. We marveled at the white dome cathedrals and soaked in the vibrant atmosphere of the city’s hilltop views. The blend of heritage and contemporary culture made Lisbon a captivating starting point for our travels.  And Portugal still had a fighting chance for the Euro Cup

From Lisbon, we journeyed north to Porto, a city rich with over 2,000 years of European history. We wandered through the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the city center, admired the tile-covered 14th-century homes, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the shops and cafés. Porto’s unique mix of history and modernity set the perfect tone for the rest of our program.

One of the highlights of our Portuguese adventures was coasteering along the rugged coastlines, where students tested their courage and agility. Surfing in Nazaré provided another exhilarating experience, with its legendary waves challenging even the most experienced surfers among us. These activities brought us closer to the natural beauty and adventurous spirit of Portugal.

And just as our time in Portugal was coming to an end, their national soccer team was eliminated from the tournament.  Time to cheer on a new nation, we set off to Spain!

Crossing into Spain, our first stop was the lively city of Bilbao in the Basque Country. The Guggenheim Museum, with its stunning modern architecture, was a cultural feast. Our day trip to Pamplona during the San Fermin festival was unforgettable, as we witnessed the excitement of the running of the bulls, an event that left a lasting impression on all of us.

Barcelona was a feast for the senses, from the awe-inspiring Sagrada Família to the Gothic Quarter’s intricate buildings. Immersing ourselves in Catalan culture, language, and cuisine was a delightful experience. Sunbathing on the Mediterranean beaches and wandering down café-lined streets in search of souvenirs added to the charm of this vibrant city.  Spain still fighting for a chance for the Euro Cup, it’s time to set sail!

Our jaunt to the island of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands was a true Mediterranean paradise. And on this day the beachside city of Alcudia, we arrive to lively celebrations along the streets and in the cafes – Spain (our team) has won the Euro Cup!  It was meant to be!

The light trail hike in the Serra de Tramuntana provided spectacular photo opportunities, and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters allowed us to explore the vibrant underwater world, adding a unique dimension to our travel experiences.

Our final destination was the golden streets of Madrid. We were mesmerized by the contemporary art collection at the Reina Sofia, the classic masterpieces at the Prado, and the serene beauty of Retiro Park. People-watching at the cafés in Plaza Mayor and shopping at Mercado de San Miguel provided the perfect ending to our cultural journey.

Throughout this journey, our students have gained invaluable experiences, from cultural enrichment and historical insights to thrilling adventures and new friendships. The teachers and support staff are immensely grateful for the enthusiasm, curiosity, and resilience displayed by every student. This journey has not only broadened horizons but also created memories that will last a lifetime. And Joey saw a dinosaur skeleton – thanks Kate!

As we part ways, we wish each of our students the very best in their future endeavors. May the knowledge, experiences, and friendships gained during this program guide you towards a bright and successful future. Safe travels, and may your journeys continue to be filled with discovery and joy.
