July 7 - Heraklion & Palace of Knossos

Today we took a trip to Heraklion! But before our departure, the Grade 11 Bio class got to extract DNA from a banana. When we arrived, the Classical Civilizations class went straight to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum where one student led the group through to highlight her top 5 artifacts as part of a project. Afterwards, the group got to explore the museum at their leisure. The Bio classes had a quick lunch in town and then got back on the bus to head to the Cretaquarium where they were joined by some of the English class students. The remainder of the students were able to explore Heraklion, eat lunch, and get some shopping done.

Afterwards, the group went to the Palace of Knossos, the legendary home of King Minos and the Minotaur’s Labyrinth. Another student apart of the Classical Civilizations class took the reins to give the group the history and discovery of the Palace as part of a project. The group was then led by tour guide Maria who was very knowledgeable and had students interact with different parts of the palace to understand its significance. Students stopped for photos, explored and admired various areas, some of which were still 85% original and preserved. We got back on the bus and arrived for a late dinner, some students went straight to bed after a long day and some still managed to get out and explore more of Old Town for gelato.
