Today, many students had the opportunity to visit one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world with our optional excursion to Ancient Olympia.

The day began with a scenic drive through the Peloponnese, where our wonderful tour assistant, Vicky, shared fascinating stories about the history of Kalamata and the surrounding region. Her knowledge brought the landscapes we passed to life and gave students a deeper appreciation for this beautiful part of Greece.

Upon arriving in Olympia, we embarked on a guided tour of the ancient site. Students explored many of its most iconic landmarks, including the Temple of Zeus, the sacred location where the Olympic flame is still lit using the sun’s rays before each modern Olympic Games, and we were able to run the track of the original Olympic running track, where athletes competed in the very first Olympic Games beginning in 776 BC. Walking along the ancient track and learning about the traditions, events, and history of the original games was an unforgettable experience and offered students a unique connection to one of the world’s greatest sporting traditions.

After exploring the archaeological site, we visited the museum, where students admired remarkable ancient sculptures, artifacts, and treasures discovered at Olympia. We then enjoyed a delicious lunch featuring traditional Greek gyros before beginning the journey back to Kalamata.

Back in Kalamata, students who remained behind enjoyed another day of classes before spending the afternoon relaxing by the pool, enjoying lunch together, and making the most of the hotel’s beautiful facilities.

In the evening, both groups reunited for another incredible buffet dinner at the hotel. With an impressive variety of dishes to choose from each night, students continue to rave about the food here…it truly feels like dining at a five-star restaurant! After dinner, everyone enjoyed some free time in town, making the most of another warm summer evening in Greece.
