Day 11: Next Stop, Santorini!

Monday, August 3rd

Today’s blog is brought to you by Vicky in Ms. Ramos’ English class.

Syros to Santorini!

We started the morning at the beautiful Dolphin Bay restaurant. After a delicious final breakfast overlooking the water in Syros, we divided into our class groups for a short work session on our travel videos and journals.

We then boarded our ferry, World Champion Jet, named after its need for speed. Formerly the fastest travelling passenger catamaran in the world, it can reach speeds up to 78 km/h. The smooth journey rocked many of us to sleep, while others enjoyed a fascinating history lesson from our Classical Civilizations teacher Mr. Peters, who pointed out the passing sights and the model F1 car onboard. Our route included five stops, travelling from Syros to Tinos, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos and finally the spectacular port of Santorini.

From there, we rode the bus up the winding roads and steep peaks of the island, taking in some of the most scenic views of the world.  Upon checking into the gorgeous Iliada Hotel on the south side of Santorini, we were guided along the quaint small town of Perissa, lined with watersports, restaurants and beach clubs, giving it a tropical resort feel. The black sand beach, made by lava and volcanic rock cooled and broken over time, is one of Santorini’s most unique and remarkable features. Due to its dark colour, in peak sun hours the sand can reach temperatures of 60-70°C, making shoes an absolute necessity!

For dinner, we enjoyed souvlaki, a Greek delicacy composed of flatbread, chicken, tzatziki, tomatoes, onions and french fries, followed by a refreshing strawberry sorbet for dessert. Our perfect Greece travel day was complete with a post dinner sign-out where we watched the sunset and continued to explore our home for the next four days!

____________

Tomorrow we will head to Fira, the capital of Santorini, to take in the sights and explore town before we head to the iconic village of Oia for the epic sunset!

Stay tuned!
