Making new friends can seem like a daunting task, especially in a new environment like a GSA program. However, there’s no need to worry—GSA is designed to foster connections and build relationships. As someone who attended a program on my own, I can confidently say it’s one of the best places to step out of your comfort zone and create lasting friendships.
A great way to start is by attending the pre-program event. This session is a fantastic icebreaker, allowing you to virtually meet others and get a feel for the group before the program begins. You can also make a group chat with those you meet—ask what others are bringing, discuss coursework, or share what you’re excited about. I found this to be extremely effective; our program group chat was filled with people sharing their nerves and excitement, which immediately created a sense of community.
Once the program begins, keep in mind that everyone is in the same boat. Whether it’s chatting at the airport while waiting for your flight, playing card games past security, or simply helping others find the terminal, these small interactions are the first steps to forming lasting connections. I remember playing UNO in the packed waiting area, with a few people I’d just met—it broke the ice and helped me feel more comfortable before we even left Toronto. During the program itself, don’t hesitate to introduce yourself or ask to join a group. Everyone is there to have a memorable experience, and meeting new people is a big part of that.
The first few days are full of opportunities to connect, so take advantage of them! If you’re nervous about approaching someone, remember that a simple, “Hey, can I join you?”, can go a long way. You’ll find that most people are just as eager to make friends as you are. By the end of the program, you’ll likely have formed close bonds with people you never expected. I keep in touch with many of the friends I made during my summer abroad with Global Summers Academy. Take the leap, keep an open mind, and embrace every opportunity to connect—you’ll be amazed at how quickly those friendships form.
