Welcome to Crete & a Mid-Trip Update

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Greetings from Heraklion, Crete! As we are just past the halfway mark of our program, I’d like to share some highlights and updates with you.

Our students have had the extraordinary chance to explore some of Greece’s most remarkable historical sites. They’ve experienced thousands of years of history firsthand, learning about ancient buildings, notable figures, significant events, and a diverse culture. While some of these experiences are guided by teachers or tour guides as part of their curriculum, many are the result of independent exploration with friends, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the local culture.

From the very beginning, our staff has emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive and cohesive community. This sense of community is crucial for both academic and social success. Being so far from home, it’s essential that we provide the care and empathy needed to navigate the challenges of being far from loved ones in Canada. I’m pleased that our students have been forming strong bonds and supporting each other both inside and outside the classroom. Their maturity and camaraderie indicate they are becoming well-prepared for the independence of post-secondary education that is just around the corner for some.

Safety is always a primary concern, and I understand any worries you may have about your child’s well-being so far from home. Rest assured; your children are very aware of the safety guidelines set by Global Summers Academy; they are reminded each evening before they sign out in their groups of four.  When a student has made a poor choice, we have a conversation about it, and it is treated as a learning opportunity.  Even in such events they have been very receptive to learning from their mistakes and moving forward with a positive attitude.

Thank you for your support. We are just 10 days away from returning home. While some students are eager to reunite with their loved ones, they are also beginning to realize how much they will miss their new friends and the incredible experiences this program has offered them.

Warm regards,

Stephanie Zourntos
