From Nagano to Kanazawa

The journey itself was an experience. Students watched the countryside fly past the windows as we travelled in comfort and marveled at the efficiency, speed, and smoothness of Japan’s rail system. For many, riding the bullet train was a bucket-list moment and a highlight of the trip already.

After arriving in Kanazawa and getting settled, it was back to work with some classes and activities. But Global Summers Academy always likes to keep students on their toes, and today’s schedule included a surprise that nobody saw coming…

A beach afternoon!

With the weather on our side, some students headed straight for the sand. Naturally, this quickly turned into an afternoon of football, beach games, and plenty of sunbathing. After the energy and pace of Tokyo, it was the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind, and enjoy a different side of Japan. Laughter echoed across the beach as students made the most of the unexpected free time.

As evening arrived, we traded beachwear for walking shoes and set out to explore one of Kanazawa’s most famous historical areas: the Higashi Chaya District.

Known as Kanazawa’s best-preserved geisha district, Higashi Chaya transported us back in time. As we wandered through the beautifully preserved wooden buildings and lantern-lit streets, students learned about the history of geisha culture and the important role this district has played in Japanese arts and entertainment for centuries.

One of the key lessons of the tour was understanding and respecting local customs. While geisha and geiko still occasionally move through the district, visitors are encouraged to respect their privacy. In keeping with local expectations, we learned that if you happen to see a geisha, the answer is simple: no photos. Preserving the dignity and traditions of the district is an important part of experiencing it responsibly.

Back at the hotel, another unexpected highlight quickly emerged. Students discovered the traditional-style nightwear provided by the hotel and immediately embraced the opportunity to try it on. Before long, hallways had transformed into an unofficial fashion show, with students proudly showing off their new looks, comparing styles, and posing for plenty of photos. It was a fun, lighthearted moment that had everyone laughing and added another memorable cultural experience to the day.

The contrast between the day’s activities couldn’t have been greater—from speeding across Japan on a bullet train, to kicking a football on the beach, to strolling through centuries-old streets steeped in history. Yet together they perfectly captured what makes this program so special.
