Final Reflections: From Strangers to Family

It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come since that first day at the airport. I remember seeing students arrive with a mixture of anticipation, excitement, uncertainty, and maybe even a little apprehension. Many of us were meeting for the very first time. We were strangers brought together by a shared opportunity and a willingness to step outside our comfort zones.

Today, as we prepare to return home, we are anything but strangers.

Over the past weeks, I have watched students grow in ways that cannot be measured by tests, assignments, or grades. I have seen young people face challenges head-on, manage homesickness and uncertainty, navigate emotions, and support one another through both the highs and the lows of travel. None of this happened alone. The endless encouragement and care shown by our incredible staff created an environment where students felt safe to take risks, ask questions, push their boundaries, and discover what they were capable of achieving.

Time and again, I watched students push through anxieties and emerge stronger because of them.

Whether it was presenting in front of their peers, exploring a new city, trying unfamiliar foods, navigating crowded train stations, or communicating despite a language barrier, every challenge became an opportunity for growth. What may have seemed intimidating at the start of the program became second nature by the end.

One of the most remarkable transformations was watching students become confident travelers. Together, we navigated some of the busiest cities in the world. Students learned how to read train maps, make transfers, follow schedules, and move through complex transportation systems with growing confidence and independence. They learned that meaningful communication doesn’t always require fluency in a language. A smile, a gesture, a few carefully learned phrases, and a willingness to engage can go a very long way.

Along the journey, students picked up Japanese words, expressions, customs, and etiquette. None of us are leaving fluent, but all of us are leaving with a far greater understanding of Japanese culture and a deeper appreciation for the kindness, hospitality, and respect demonstrated by the people of Japan. We arrived as visitors; we leave with a connection to this incredible country that will remain with us for years to come.

I am immensely proud of our students.

I am proud of the hard work they committed to their studies. I am proud of the patience they demonstrated during travel delays, schedule changes, and the occasional hiccups that inevitably accompany international travel. I am proud of the courage they showed when stepping outside their comfort zones. And I am especially proud of the spirit of adventure they embraced during their free time, whether it was venturing out to explore a neighborhood, trying a new food, attending a baseball game, meeting local students, or simply saying “yes” to an unfamiliar experience.

These are the moments where growth truly happens.

I know this program has changed me personally, and I am incredibly grateful to have shared it with such an extraordinary group of students. Their curiosity, resilience, humour, kindness, and willingness to embrace every opportunity reminded me daily why programs like this matter.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge our phenomenal teaching staff.

Their commitment to students, their passion for experiential education, and their tireless efforts behind the scenes are what make Global Summers Academy programs possible. While students often see the exciting activities, lessons, and excursions, it’s the dedication of these educators that allows those moments to happen. They mentor, encourage, support, educate, problem-solve, celebrate successes, and provide comfort when needed. They embody the very heart of what Global Summers Academy stands for.

Experiential education is not simply about visiting a new place. It is about creating opportunities for students to connect learning with real life, develop confidence through experience, and discover strengths they may not have known they possessed. Our teaching staff bring that philosophy to life every single day.

As we prepare to say goodbye, I find myself reflecting on one final truth.

Somewhere between the airport, the classrooms, the train stations, the temples, the presentations, the laughter, the challenges, and the shared meals, this group became a family.

The friendships formed here are real. The lessons learned here are lasting. The confidence gained here is meaningful.

Many of our students will soon head toward post-secondary education and the next stages of their lives. As they do, they carry with them far more than photographs and souvenirs. They leave with greater independence, stronger communication skills, increased cultural awareness, a deeper understanding of themselves, and the confidence that comes from successfully navigating the unknown.

That is a powerful gift.

I genuinely believe these experiences will influence how our students approach future opportunities, challenges, and relationships. They have learned that they are capable of more than they imagined. They have learned that growth often happens just beyond their comfort zone. Most importantly, they have learned that the world is both larger and more connected than they may have previously understood.

To our students: thank you for your trust, your enthusiasm, your resilience, and your willingness to embrace every moment of this journey.

To our staff: thank you for your unwavering dedication and belief in the power of experiential education.

And to everyone who supported this program from home: thank you for allowing these incredible young people the opportunity to experience something truly transformative.

My heart is full.

I am grateful.

I am inspired.

And above all, I am so incredibly proud.
