We learned the phrase Pura Vida on our first day of our GSA Costa Rica Program. Pura Vida is a Costa Rican phrase that literally means “pure life,” but it represents much more than that. It reflects a positive outlook, gratitude, resilience, and a way of embracing life’s experiences, relationships, and adventures with joy and appreciation. Our journey through our program really embraced this phrase or way of life.

We have done many travel days so far on this program, and today’s journey from Liberia to Toronto will be the last one. It is safe to say your children are more seasoned travelers than they were when they started on July 22, 2026. It is hard to describe the impact that this program had on the students, staff, and myself, but we do know that when we all have some time to reflect on our journey, we will look back on this opportunity with a big smile on our faces and a deeper appreciation for the Costa Rican spirit of Pura Vida. Our last dinner and dance at the Colono Hotel was a wonderful evening of celebrating what was accomplished by a great group of young adults who formed a community in just 25 days. Even though I have done these programs for many years, it still surprises me just how close a bond they make in such a short period of time.

Your children have big hearts and a strong sense of direction for where they are going in life. They are ready for what lies beyond high school. The students proved time and time again that they were responsible young adults, while also embracing the enthusiasm and joy for life that embodies Pura Vida. We visited three unique ecosystems in Costa Rica, and throughout the program the students balanced their academics with exploring the country and building positive relationships with one another. Our last night, awards ceremony, and dance showcased the connections they made as they enjoyed each other’s company and relished one more evening around the pool. Our DJ was amazing, and we ended the evening with one last swim. Check out our Instagram for photos and videos. It was a perfect Pura Vida way to end a fantastic program.

We want to take this time to thank all the parents for raising such great young adults and for the support you gave to me, our staff, and your child throughout the program. I would also like to thank our incredible staff team: David, Mariana, and Maureen. You were truly amazing to work alongside. Our team connected with students to bring out the best possible outcomes for academic success while showing great empathy and care for your loved ones throughout the journey, reflecting the kindness and connection at the heart of Pura Vida. I could not have done this without them. Their tireless effort, passion for their subject areas, and commitment to creating fun and meaningful experiences made this program the success it was. The positive connections formed between students and staff highlighted the beauty of the experiential programs that Global Summers Academy offers. Thank you all so much; we hope to work together again another time.

This program is coming home today, Saturday evening, but its impact will live on. The bonds formed on this trip will not be broken. These new best friends, this new community, and the memories of Pura Vida will continue on in Canada.

Have a wonderful rest of the summer, everyone.

Sincerely,

Jason Smith
