Day 16: Alpine Adventures, Swiss Traditions & All-You-Can-Eat Pizza
Our 16th day on the Grand Tour of Europe began in true Swiss style—with a hearty and delicious breakfast. Students indulged in a dessert-like spread of warm crepes topped with Biscoff, Nutella, and a variety of local jams, balanced (of course) with crisp bacon and hearty fare to fuel up for the mountain adventure ahead.
Once fed and bundled up, we gathered just outside the hotel where our expert Swiss guides met us, ready to lead us on a journey up the mighty Matterhorn. A short walk through the charming streets of Zermatt brought us to the gondola lift. Although high winds prevented us from ascending to the second level, our guides adapted seamlessly, adjusting our route and ensuring a rich and safe alpine experience.
We disembarked at the first level of the mountain, where our hike began—and what a hike it was! Over the next few hours, students ascended several hundred meters through breathtaking terrain, stopping at key points to learn about the Swiss natural environment and mountain traditions.
Our guides introduced us to the European larch, a deciduous conifer that turns a brilliant gold in autumn before shedding its needles—just like the fall colours back home in Canada. We learned how these versatile trees are used for heating, insulation, and medicine, playing a vital role in both historic and modern Swiss life.
We also discovered one of Switzerland’s hidden luxuries—ice-cold, crystal-clear spring water, flowing freely in troughs along the trails and in town. Hydration, fresh from the Alps!
The trail eventually brought us to a large suspension bridge, where students paused to capture stunning photos and take in the panoramic views. The descent wasn’t via gondola, but a full hike back down into Zermatt, offering even more insight into Swiss architecture and culture. Along the way, we passed centuries-old buildings: dry stone walls built without cement, and elevated food storage huts perched on stilts with flat stone “rat guards” to keep out unwanted visitors.
After a 3.5-hour immersive hike, students were given time to rest, explore, or grab a snack before regrouping at the base of the hotel for dinner.
To ensure smooth service, dinner was served in two seatings, and once again the meal exceeded expectations. A robust salad bar, comforting soup, and best of all—unlimited freshly made pizza from a wood-fired oven. After the day’s exertion, every bite was well-earned.
From alpine ecology to centuries-old traditions, today was a living classroom in the heart of the Swiss Alps. It was a day of challenge, beauty, and cultural discovery—all safely guided, expertly planned, and thoroughly enjoyed.
Another unforgettable chapter in our incredible Grand Tour of Europe.
