Our 25th and final day of the Grand Tour of Europe began with a quiet energy — a mix of reflection, fatigue, and anticipation. The hotel breakfast, familiar yet still comforting, offered one last shared moment around the table before the long journey home to Canada. As plates were cleared, suitcases reweighed, and last-minute items shuffled between travel companions, the reality of departure began to set in.

Over 100 pieces of luggage were expertly packed onto the bus — our mobile home for so many memorable adventures — for the final time. Students found their seats, settled in, and we set off toward the airport, winding through the streets of Rome one last time. The bus ride was unusually calm, filled with quiet conversation, sleepy heads resting against windows, and stolen glances out at a city we had grown to love.

Upon arrival at the airport, the process unfolded like a well-oiled machine — a testament to how independent and confident our group had become. Passports were returned, check-ins completed, and bags dropped with surprising efficiency. Students moved in groups toward security, navigating the airport like seasoned travellers.

Despite our hearty breakfast, hunger returned — and many students made their way to airport cafés, indulging in one last taste of Italy. Plates of creamy carbonara and fragrant pesto filled the waiting area as laughter echoed across tables. No one wanted the experience to end, but the excitement of reuniting with loved ones kept spirits high.

As boarding time approached, heartfelt goodbyes began. Some tears, many hugs, and endless promises to stay connected filled the air. Still, there was a quiet joy in knowing that we were going home — forever changed, but returning as stronger, wiser, more connected individuals.

Once in the air, students sank into their seats — headphones on, blankets pulled up, a movie playing or memories flooding their minds. The nearly 10-hour flight passed with a shared sense of quiet satisfaction. We had done something extraordinary.

As the plane touched down in Toronto, a surge of excitement rippled through the group. We were home — almost. The baggage carousel tested everyone’s patience one final time, but once the last bag was claimed, we made our way toward the arrivals hall.

And then, the moment we’d all been waiting for.

A wave of love and joy crashed over us as families embraced their sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, friends and loved ones. Cheers, hugs, happy tears — it was a beautiful, chaotic celebration. Yet among the reunions, students also turned to each other, now friends who had shared something no one else could fully understand.

As final hugs were exchanged and tearful goodbyes whispered, plans to reconnect over the summer were made. Though our grand tour had come to an end, something lasting remained: the friendships, the memories, and the growth that came from experiencing the world together.

It was the last page of this chapter — but the beginning of countless stories that will be told for years to come.

What an incredible journey. What an unforgettable family.

On the 24th day of our Grand Tour of Europe, the hotel was quiet in the early morning as students slowly trickled into breakfast — weary from a late night of studying, but filled with anticipation for the day ahead. A nourishing meal helped sharpen their minds and prepare them for what would be both a final academic milestone and a day of bittersweet reflection.

Our exam room was set up with care and intention, providing a calm, focused space where students could showcase the learning and growth they’ve accumulated over the past 24 days. As they filed in, there was a hum of nervous excitement — a sense of accomplishment in the air, knowing they were crossing the final academic threshold of this journey.

After several concentrated hours, every student completed their final exam with pride. A wave of relief swept through the group as they were dismissed to enjoy some well-earned free time — to pack, relax, or venture out for one last walk through the Eternal City.

As the sun began to dip, something magical happened in the hotel lobby — one by one, students emerged in their finest attire. Dresses, polished shoes, and confident smiles. It was clear: they had saved something special for this final banquet, and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement.

Dinner was a celebration. We began with rich pasta shells smothered in cheese curds — an unexpected (and welcome) nod to home — followed by perfectly roasted chicken served with a crisp garden salad. The meal concluded with a soft, creamy pudding cake that delighted everyone at the table.

Then, the laughter began.

Following the meal, we moved into a joyful round of humorous awards, lovingly crafted by staff to highlight the quirks, unforgettable moments, and unique personalities that made this group so special. From “Most Likely to become and F1 mechanic” to “Check-in selfie queens” each award was met with roaring cheers and laughter that echoed across the room. Every student had their moment to shine — and be celebrated by their peers.

But the night wasn’t over yet.

To close the evening, we dimmed the lights and played a final slideshow — a moving tribute to 25 unforgettable days. As image after image flashed across the screen — from castles and cathedrals to classroom moments and beach days — the room filled with both laughter and tears. Students leaned on each other, smiling through emotion as the journey they had lived together unfolded in front of them one last time.

It was a powerful, emotional conclusion to a day — and a tour — that had become so much more than just travel. These students arrived as strangers and ended as a family.

As the slideshow ended and the lights came back on, Linda offered a gentle but important reminder: our departure was early, and the bus would be rolling at 8:40 sharp. With bags still to finish and hearts full to the brim, students reluctantly made their way to their rooms.

This wasn’t just the end of the day — it was the culmination of an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Our 23rd day on the Grand Tour of Europe began with determination and focus as students dove into their most intensive day of classwork yet. From presenting final projects to completing tests and polishing their culminating portfolios, the energy in the classroom spaces was focused and purposeful. With exams just around the corner, students were clearly dialed in — tired, yes, but committed to finishing strong.

Despite the fatigue that comes with late-night roommate bonding and a whirlwind travel schedule, the resilience of our group shone through. After a productive morning, students were given free time to relax over lunch and recharge.

In the afternoon, we gathered once again for one of Rome’s most iconic experiences: a visit to the mighty Colosseum. Getting 58 students onto a local Roman bus during peak humidity was no small feat — we became quite familiar with the phrase packed like sardines. But spirits remained high, and the moment we stepped off the bus and into the Roman sun, we were met with a breeze of fresh air and excitement.

Meeting our knowledgeable guide just outside the Colosseum, we began a fascinating journey through one of the greatest feats of ancient architecture. Towering above us, the Colosseum stood as a testament to the ingenuity and intensity of Roman life. As we explored its tunnels and upper decks, we learned about the lives of gladiators, the massive audiences of up to 70,000 spectators, and the hidden engineering marvels that brought this arena to life.

Our walking tour continued through the ancient Roman Forum, where ruins of temples, arches, and civic buildings told stories from thousands of years ago — including a structure reminiscent of France’s Arc de Triomphe.

As the sun began to lower, we made our way to dinner, where we were treated to a delicious three-course meal: pesto pasta to start, followed by roasted chicken and salad, and a refreshing lemon slushy for dessert — a perfect ending to a warm Roman day.

The evening took a heartfelt turn when Donte introduced us to his two sisters who had traveled all the way to Rome to see him. Their reunion was full of hugs and joy, a beautiful moment of family connection in the midst of our busy tour.

After dinner, students were given a bit of free time before heading back for a well-earned night of rest — with gentle reminders about tomorrow’s final exams. With just two days remaining, we’re savoring each experience, learning moment, and connection that this grand adventure continues to bring.

Day 22 of our Grand Tour of Europe brought a perfect blend of sun-soaked relaxation and joyful celebration. With Rome still buzzing in our minds, about half of our group opted for a beach day escape to the stunning Italian coastline, ready to soak up the Mediterranean sun.

With sunscreen, sunglasses, and beach towels in hand (but curiously, no hats!), our students boarded the bus for a scenic drive to the coast. Upon arrival, the scene was like something from a Monet painting—a crystal blue sea, gentle waves, warm sunshine, and a refreshing breeze. Awaiting us were rows of chaise lounges and umbrellas, set up and ready, making it easy for everyone to settle in and enjoy the day safely and comfortably.

Sunscreen application was… let’s say enthusiastic for some, less so for others (lessons learned!). The water was cool, clear, and incredibly inviting, with the first brave swimmers quickly confirming it was the perfect temperature for the day. A highlight came when the local lifeguard organized an impromptu swim race, which Paiten won with flair (though she cheekily admitted to running much of the way). He followed up with beach sprint races, and to everyone’s surprise, Teo surged ahead with lightning speed, outpacing Donte in a thrilling finish.

Meanwhile, a group of curious students learned from the local bartender that edible clams could be found in the sand. Excited by this discovery, they managed to locate one and returned to ask for preparation instructions. Though told how to cook it, they lacked the proper tools—so in true beachside fashion, they tried to convince the boys to eat it raw. No takers!

After a long, laughter-filled day, we regrouped in the nearby beach house to wait for our bus. It was clear that a few of the boys had skipped a second coat of sunscreen, and their rosy shoulders told the tale—they’ll be feeling the sun’s embrace for the next few days!

Back in Rome, students had a short window of free time to relax and regroup before heading out again—this time, for a fantastic dinner in the heart of the city. The restaurant exceeded expectations with a delicious spread starting with crisp bruschetta, followed by unlimited wood-fired pizza, and ending with a rich and creamy chocolate mousse for dessert.

The evening was capped off with a special moment—Yousef’s 17th birthday celebration! The entire group joined in a spirited rendition of “Happy Birthday,” and he was presented with a slice of cake to mark the occasion.

From beach games and sun-kissed adventures to a joyful birthday dinner, Day 22 offered the perfect combination of relaxation, laughter, and meaningful moments. As we near the final days of our journey, spirits remain high and memories continue to grow.

Our 21st day on the Grand Tour of Europe began with a sense of anticipation and purpose. While the afternoon promised a once-in-a-lifetime tour of Vatican City, our morning was focused and productive. After a hearty breakfast, students settled into their morning classes, using the time to concentrate on final assignments, culminating projects, and preparation for the final exam. There was a healthy mix of focus and nervous energy, but the students’ dedication was evident—we’re looking forward to some truly impressive final results.

Once classes wrapped up, students were given some free time to relax and recharge, with a very clear instruction: be at the Vatican City gates by 2:40 p.m. sharp, with a Google Maps pin provided for ease and safety. We’re happy to report that everyone arrived early, ready to experience one of the most iconic places in the world.

After smoothly passing through security checks, we stepped into the inner sanctum of Vatican City, and the moment we reached the top of the steps to see the basilica unfold before us was simply breathtaking. Cameras clicked as we paused to take it all in—the sheer scale and beauty of the space was unforgettable.

Our guided tour began with the Vatican Museums, where we were immersed in centuries of art, sculpture, tapestries, and painted masterpieces. Every room offered a new marvel—each hallway a story waiting to be told. From the detailed marble statues to the intricately woven fabrics and frescoed ceilings, it was an overwhelming feast for the eyes.

The pinnacle of our visit came next: we were ushered through a special access point into the Sistine Chapel—an honour in itself. Inside, we stood quietly in reverence beneath Michelangelo’s masterpiece, heads tilted upward in awe. Though photography is strictly prohibited, we respected the guidelines (though a few phones may have mysteriously flickered on… oops!). Regardless, no photo could truly capture the emotional impact of seeing this iconic space in person.

Exiting the chapel, we were again treated to a private pathway, typically reserved for clergy, which led us down a stunning marble staircase and out into St. Peter’s Square. From there, students had time to explore on their own, with many choosing to enter St. Peter’s Basilica —a chance to stand beneath the largest dome in the world—while others took the opportunity to walk through the charming streets of Rome.

In the evening, we all gathered for a memorable dinner at a local Roman restaurant. The menu featured cheesy pasta, savoury sautéed chicken with roasted potatoes, and a rich tiramisu to cap it off. But the real magic began when the restaurant owner surprised Caitlyn with a rousing ‘Happy Birthday’, complete with song and applause. Then, as if out of a movie, he began teaching impromptu ballroom dance lessons, inviting students to the dance floor in pairs. Laughter filled the room as couples spun and stumbled through the steps, cheered on by their friends.

From the sacred halls of the Sistine Chapel to the joy and laughter of the dance floor, Day 21 was a truly unforgettable chapter of our Grand Tour of Europe—one that blended reflection, learning, culture, and celebration into a day we’ll never forget.

Our 20th day on the Grand Tour of Europe began with the comfort and familiarity of a fresh, healthy breakfast at our Florence hotel. With the Tuscan sun shining, some students took the opportunity to enjoy their morning meal on the hotel’s terrace, soaking in the last warm rays and atmosphere of this beautiful city.

After breakfast, we began our well-coordinated departure—rolling over 100 pieces of luggage from the hotel lobby to our waiting coach. The hotel staff saw us off with warm smiles, clearly charmed by our group. Our bus driver once again showcased his skill and resourcefulness, managing to fit every last suitcase with precision and care.

Soon, we were on the road. Traffic leaving Florence was slow, but our expert planning ensured that the schedule remained flexible and smooth. Once on the highway, the journey flowed with ease. Around the halfway mark, we made a timely rest stop—a chance to stretch our legs, grab snacks, and use the facilities. Spirits were high and energy refreshed as we continued southward.

As we approached Rome, excitement built. The skyline began to change, and suddenly there it was—the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica rising majestically above the rooftops. It was a breathtaking welcome to the Eternal City. We arrived at our hotel, got checked in efficiently, and took some time to settle into our new home base.

Later in the afternoon, we hopped back on the bus and headed into central Rome for an exciting exploration challenge. Students were divided into teams for a city-wide scavenger hunt, racing to uncover Rome’s iconic landmarks for a sweet reward: free gelato for the winning team. It was an engaging way to combine fun with learning, and students loved the chance to navigate the city in small groups.

We ended our evening at a delightful Roman restaurant, where we were treated to a classic Italian meal: crispy bruschetta, handmade pizzas, and a refreshing lemon smoothie for dessert. The night became even more special as we celebrated David’s birthday—complete with a heartfelt rendition of Happy Birthday and a personalized birthday cake to mark the occasion.

With full bellies and happy hearts, we returned to the hotel reflecting on how far we’ve come—and how much we still have to look forward to in these final days of discovery and celebration in Rome. From Florence to the heart of Italy, Day 20 was another unforgettable chapter in our Grand Tour of Europe.

Our 19th day on the Grand Tour of Europe began with yet another delicious and balanced breakfast, featuring juicy watermelon, fresh breads, and a few decadent pastries to keep spirits high and energy levels up. With a day full of adventure ahead, students were eager to begin.

Roughly half of our group had pre-booked an excursion to the legendary city of Pisa, and they gathered outside the hotel, buzzing with anticipation. Right on schedule, our private mini-coach bus arrived, providing a comfortable and spacious ride. Our skilled driver navigated the scenic route swiftly and safely, delivering us to Pisa 15 minutes ahead of schedule—a testament to the seamless coordination that has defined this tour.

After a short, picturesque 21-minute walk, we arrived at the heart of Pisa: Cathedral Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Cameras clicked from every angle as students posed, marveled, and soaked in the surreal sight of this architectural wonder. But the experience was far from just visual—our guided walking tour brought the history of Pisa to life. We learned about its ancient rivalry with Rome, its two leaning towers, and the remarkable legacy of this once powerful maritime republic.

Lunch was a treat in itself—refreshing soft drinks, an abundance of fresh pizza, followed by crisp salads and creamy gelato made the meal feel as much like a celebration as a midday break. After lunch, students had free time to explore and shop, wandering through the city’s charming streets, markets, and boutiques. As always, the group regrouped with perfect punctuality, and our driver whisked us back to Florence, even arriving 20 minutes early.

Back in Florence, students enjoyed a bit of downtime before gathering for a drone group photo, capturing the moment from above as a visual keepsake of our shared adventure. The evening brought yet another outstanding dinner featuring pasta, tender pork with roasted potatoes, and ice cream for dessert.

The real highlight of the night, however, came in the form of a joyful surprise—when Camryn’s parents, who were traveling in Europe, arrived unexpectedly to visit their daughter. The emotional reunion was met with cheers, laughter, and even a few tears as Camryn embraced her family, clearly overjoyed and stunned by the visit.

To close out the evening, Linda gathered everyone to provide important instructions for packing and preparing for our upcoming transfer to Rome, ensuring that everyone felt ready and informed. With the evening free to enjoy their last night in Florence, students made the most of it—soaking in the atmosphere, bonding with friends, and reflecting on yet another unforgettable day.

From Pisa’s iconic towers to surprise hugs in Florence, Day 19 was filled with magic, meaning, and memories. The Grand Tour continues to deliver experiences our students will never forget.

Our 18th day on the Grand Tour of Europe began, as always, with a delicious and varied breakfast spread. While some students leaned into the sweeter side of the buffet with sprinkled donuts and waffles that looked more like dessert than breakfast, they assured us it was all balanced out with a piece of fruit or two! Energized and ready to dive into the day, we made our way through the morning haze to a nearby university campus, where we had reserved spacious, modern classrooms.

The change of setting was a welcome one—quiet, focused, and academic—allowing all our program groups to consolidate their hands-on experiences into meaningful academic reflection. History students contextualized their travels, photography students reviewed their shots, and English and business students refined their writing and presentations. It was a highly productive 3-hour block that blended the best of experiential and traditional learning in a truly inspiring setting.

After class, students had time to enjoy a leisurely lunch before regrouping for an expertly guided walking tour of Florence. As we meandered through the city’s narrow, historic streets, it became immediately clear why Florence is considered one of the great artistic capitals of the world. The sheer scale and splendor of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo) left many in awe—not only because of its magnificent dome and striking marble façade, but for the centuries of history embedded in every stone.

Our route took us past open piazzas, ancient ruins visible through glass floors in modern cafés, and eventually to the banks of the Arno River, where we crossed the iconic Ponte Vecchio. The students marveled at the vibrant shops and age-old structure of this famed bridge, lined with jewelry boutiques and artisan storefronts that have stood for generations.

Back at the hotel, everyone had time to freshen up before heading out for another authentic Italian dinner experience. Tonight’s menu featured fusilli pasta, with some adventurous students adding a drizzle of spicy chili oil, followed by a fresh green salad with sautéed chicken, and of course, another helping of creamy, rich tiramisu to end the evening.

It was a day that blended academic focus, cultural immersion, and culinary delight—a shining example of the kind of well-rounded, thoughtfully planned days that make this Grand Tour so exceptional.

Another unforgettable chapter in our journey across Europe!

Our 17th day on the Grand Tour of Europe began with a comforting and hearty breakfast—much needed on this chilly, rainy Swiss morning with temperatures hovering at just 6°C. Students carefully debated their wardrobe choices, knowing we’d be crossing climates and ending the day in Italy’s warmer weather.

With bags packed we rolled our luggage from the hotel to the train station. Thankfully, the route was mostly downhill—but the steady rain made it a true travel challenge. Still, spirits were high as we made our way to the Zermatt train station and boarded the quick 20-minute ride to the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch.

Waiting at the terminal was our private coach, clearly marked with a Global Summers Academy sign—a welcome sight. Our expert driver performed the miracle of the day: loading over 100 pieces of luggage into the undercarriage with ease and precision. Once settled, we bid a misty farewell to Switzerland and began our scenic journey toward Italy.

The drive was breathtaking, filled with soaring alpine views and mountain passes. Crossing the border into Italy brought a change in scenery, language, and… urgency. It became clear that some students had skipped the restroom break in Täsch. After one unsuccessful attempt, we finally found a small roadside gas station with a single bathroom—and a kind staff willing to help. Students made the most of the stop, picking up Italian snacks and drinks to fuel the ride ahead.

By early afternoon, we arrived in Milan, where students explored the historic city in small, safe groups. Many enjoyed their first taste of authentic Italian cuisine, from fresh pasta to gelato, and returned to the bus energized and satisfied.

We then continued on our final leg of the day—a nearly four-hour drive to Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance. Upon arrival, we navigated a few room changes (handled calmly and efficiently by staff), before everyone settled into their accommodations for the next phase of the journey.

Dinner followed shortly after at a cozy local restaurant, where we were treated to a delicious Italian meal: piping hot pasta, tender veal with fries, and creamy tiramisu for dessert.

It was a full day of travel, navigating weather, borders, and logistics—but it was executed with care, flexibility, and teamwork. Students and staff alike handled the transitions with grace and good humor. And with Florence as our new home base, we are ready to soak in the history, art, and beauty of Italy as we begin the final chapter of our incredible Grand Tour of Europe.
